Chapter Eleven

As I expected, Rikki was standing by the car when we stepped out of the bar. But what I didn’t expect to find was her in her wolf skin. Rikki’s wolf was radiant, standing on strong muscular legs. She moved quickly to my side as if wanting to hold me, but she was clearly unable. Apparently, she forgot we were in the open where humans could see her as she stood with no concern as to who was watching.

One of the officers exited the bar behind us. As I stepped to the side, he leaped back in terror and nearly tripped over his own foot. He reached for the door, opening it halfway as he looked from Rikki to us in confusion. Rikki snarled protectively and pressed my body into the car so no one could reach me.

I reached for her fur, using it to pull me up straight.

“I’m safe. It's just a cop,” I said, realizing that Rikki’s wolf was leading.

My brow furrowed at Rikki for putting us in this situation. I needed her to not do anything else to risk more spectators. I had no clue what to tell the officer and my lips pressed tightly together. Rikki looked like a wolf, a very big one, with dark fur and gold eyes.

Braelin stepped forward and smiled politely at the officer as if she were about to convince him he was hallucinating. A few people from across the street stared and then speed walked the opposite direction. I mentally groaned, wanting to slap Rikki for coming in her wolf’s skin.

“We’re not from around here. My apologies for not having her on leash,” Braelin’s smile widened as the officer looked at Rikki and back to my sister with doubtful eyes.

Rikki’s eyes narrowed at Braelin for implying she was a dog.

“That’s a...” the officer stuttered and looked to Rikki again as if he needed to see her to confirm his words. Another officer called for him to move but he only held the door tightly.

“Actually, she is half wolf. Her breed is a Mackenzie valley wolf. They are considered one of the biggest breeds of wolf, if not the biggest, if memory serves me.” Braelin casually walked to Rikki’s side and ran her fingers over Rikki’s body, trying to convince the officer she was harmless.

I held in a snort, sensing Rikki’s anguish at being labeled a half breed and a mundane wolf at that. The officer noticed my grin and I covered my face with my hand and waved my other hand in apology.

“I’m sorry. I’m just so horrified by everything that I feel like I need to either cry or laugh,” I explained.

The officer scrutinized me briefly but glanced away. His eyes hardened, probably confused as to why he felt so uneasy around us all.

“Well...you need to get that thing out of here before it gives an old lady a heart attack or something.”

Braelin nodded. “Will do!” she said and walked to her car to open the backseat door. “Come on, girl,” she told Rikki.
